As temperatures rise and changes occur in the climate conditions in which Maine's forests currently thrive, the character of these forests is expected to change—particularly the spruce/fir forests, which are vital to the state's nearly $1.4 billion pulp and paper industry and treasured for their scenic and recreational value. Losses in spruce/fir forests will eventually affect the animal species dependent on them, such as the Canada lynx, snowshoe hare, and Bicknell's thrush.
