Vermont Forests

Changing landscape of our forests

Vermont would experience a significant loss of the climate conditions that support the state's scenic maple, beech and birch forests this century if we continue on a path of high emissions of heat-trapping gases, but would see little change if we decrease our emissions. In addition, ongoing winter warming is expected to further disrupt the pattern of freezing nights and warm days necessary for prime maple syrup production, posing a challenge to Vermont's $11 million maple syrup industry.
