Pittsburgh Health

Facing 24 days over 100°F

Pittsburgh could experience more than 60 days a year of temperatures soaring over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with more than 20 of these days reaching into the 100s by the end of the century, under the higher emission scenario. These extreme temperatures greatly increase the risk of heat stress, heart attack, and death. Cities across the state will need to prepare for an increase in dangerously hot conditions by taking steps (e.g., improving insulation in homes and businesses, establishing heat warning systems such as Philadelphia has done, and setting up cooling centers) that can lessen the impacts of extreme heat on vulnerable populations.
